Why did my friend and step-dad do this?

i was raised in a very superstitious and traditional family, and we believe in spirits and hauntings due to past experiences, well when i told a friend of mine he exploded in my face and got very insulting calling me stupid, and whenever someone talks about spirits he attacks them even if they aren't talking to him, my step dad is also very sensitive about it, both are catholic, and think my family are idiots because we believe in spirits and we are pro free thought, also they don't like the fact that we don't worship the saints only god and christ, so my step dad tries time and time again to convert us and my friend just insults everyone because we are superstitious what is wrong with them and why are they doing this?
